Program Overview

The Snohomish School District is committed to an education philosophy that recognizes and promotes academic excellence by meeting the educational needs of all students. Our program for highly capable students has four main goals that guide the development of the curriculum:

  • Goal 1:  Emphasize higher-level thinking skills in all aspects of curriculum design
  • Goal 2:  Introduce students to a wide range of intellectual horizons
  • Goal 3:  Foster in students a desire for academic excellence and a commitment to developing their talents
  • Goal 4:  Build an awareness that intellectual development is an active, integrative and collaborative process

If you have any questions about the programs or the application process for the 4/5/6 Highly Capable or Middle School Honors Programs, please contact Linda Varner, Honors Coordinator, at 360-563-7296 or Linda.Varner@sno.wednet.edu.

Elementary School 4/5/6 Highly Capable Program

Beginning in grade four, those students who apply and qualify are placed in our 4/5/6 Highly Capable Program, which is offered at each elementary school.  This program is a multi-age, full-time class that provides a challenging and age-appropriate accelerated, enriched, and integrated curriculum.  The 4/5/6 class is designed to meet the needs of those students who by virtue of outstanding academic abilities are capable of high performance in the areas of verbal linguistic and logical/mathematical intelligence.

Middle School Honors Program

Science: Our 7th and 8th Grade Honors Science classes are advanced, academically challenging courses designed to help students develop the skills necessary to succeed in secondary honors and AP Science classes.

Language Arts: Our 7th and 8th Grade Honors Language Arts classes focus on advanced reading and composition skills in preparation for honors and AP English classes.

High School Honors & AP Honors

Honors classes are offered in the sciences and language arts in grades 9-12.  These courses are academically rigorous with the intent of preparing those students who are college-bound and who wish to enroll in our Advanced Placement (AP) program.

The Advanced Placement Program

Snohomish High School offers one of the most successful AP programs in the state.  The AP Program provides an opportunity for our students to pursue and receive credit for college-level work while still in high school.

Sponsored by the College Board, the AP Program is based on the premise that college-level material can be taught successfully to able and well-prepared secondary school students.  More than 2,900 universities and colleges grant credit, advanced placement, or both to students who perform satisfactorily on the exams which are administered in May of each year and graded by the College Board.

Snohomish High School offers numerous AP courses, including:  Studio Art, Environmental Science, Chemistry, Calculus, Physics, US History, Biology, Statistics, English Literature, & Spanish.

Placement Procedure & Application Packet

If you wish to consider placement in the 4/5/6 Highly Capable Program or the Middle School Honors Program for your student, please take the following steps:

1) Complete an application packet and turn it in to either the office of your student's elementary school, middle school, or the RSC (District Resource & Service Center, located at 1601 Avenue D in Snohomish).  The due date for the application changes slightly each year, but is always around the end of February, with testing to follow in March.

The application packet is available to print on this website, at the RSC, and in the main office of your child's school, up until the application deadline.  Please contact Linda Varner at
360-563-7296 or Linda.Varner@sno.wednet.edu for any application inquires after the deadline.

2) Bring your child to the testing site at the scheduled time.  Schedules are listed on the application packet.

3) If the scores and application indicate that the student is qualified, a letter of acceptance will be sent directly to you in early June.

Placement is based on the student's performance on the School and College Abilities Test (SCAT), Level Tests, the student's past performance, and the information contained in the completed recommendation forms.
