Special Services: Programs OfferedOperation School BellOperation School Bell, sponsored by the Assistance League of Everett, provides clothes to any needy child enrolled in Snohomish County schools, kindergarten through ninth grade. Permission for this service must be granted to school personnel by a parent or guardian of the student. If you are in need of this service or know of someone who is, please contact your child's school's office. A clothing list with the need indicated by the parent or guardian must accompany the child to Operation School Bell. Since the students try on the clothes before selecting, the Assistance League requests that children bathe and wash their hair the night before going to Operation School Bell. Operation School Bell is not a tax supported agency. It is a group of citizens helping children in a time of need. ChildfindThe special education department is seeking to locate any students, age birth to 21, who have developmental disabilities or handicapping conditions and are not currently being served. Referral may be made by any concerned person and should be made to Marian Sherwood in the Special Services Department, 360-563-7310. Contact may be made at the district office by either a letter, phone call, or in person. Screening is free of charge but appointments are required. Support StaffThe district employs hearing and speech specialists, occupational therapists, physical therapists, and the services of a psychologist. For more information, contact the Executive Director for Special Services, 360-563-7308. Special Education Parents Advisory CouncilThe Special Education Parents Advisory Council has general meetings that will be established in the fall. The purpose of this group is to promote special education programs in the district and enhance communication between parents, community and schools. Title 1/L.A.P.Title 1 is the largest federal aid program for our nation's schools. The Learning Assistance Program (L.A.P.) is a state-funded program. The goal of Title 1 and L.A.P. is to provide extra help and instruction for students who qualify. These are children who are not performing at the level of others their age. Review of Educational RecordsUpon request, the parent(s) of a special education student or adult student will be afforded an opportunity to inspect, review and challenge all educational records which shall include, but not be limited to, the identification, evaluation, delivery of educational services, and provision of free, appropriate public education (FAPE) to the student. The district shall comply with the request promptly and before any meeting regarding an individualized education program or hearing relating to the identification, evaluation, educational placement of the student or provision of FAPE to the student, including disciplinary proceedings. In any case, the district shall respond no more than 45 calendar days after the date the district received the request. If an educational record includes information on more than one student, the parents (and/or adult student) may only inspect and review information relating to their child. School personnel receiving requests for educational records will immediately forward the request to the special education department. |
