Bond Projects:
Community Design Workshop -
January 22, 2005

On January 22nd, a group of approximately 40 Snohomish citizens gathered
with our architects to learn about the site for both the new elementary
school and the new high school, and about the programs planned for the
schools.
The
workshop started with a presentation of information about the building
site on Cathcart Way, and the program that is being planned for the
schools (as determined by our educational specifications committees).
Participants in this program were then asked to identify issues that
would be likely to effect the placement of the buildings and associated
features on the site, based upon seven key topics: pedestrian access,
vehicle access, building placement, field placement, safety and
security, building features, and community issues. Each person was given
the opportunity to express their opinions on each of these topics.
Participants were then given a chance to suggest how buildings, fields,
and other features should be placed on the site through a site planning
exercise that was facilitated by our design team. The participants were
placed in groups and asked to take the key elements of the school
(buildings, fields, parking lots, etc.), which were represented in
scaled models, and place them on a five-foot scaled model of the
Cathcart site. There were two teams working on elementary school models,
and five teams working on high school models. Each team came up with a
unique model for the school's design. The architects discussed the
reasons for the placement of each piece with the groups in order to gain
an understanding of how the issues expressed earlier affected their
decisions on field/building placement.
The District and our
architects will use this feedback as the design of the school
progresses.
