School supply backpack program returns for 2011-2012 school year

The annual School Supplies in a Backpack Program has kicked off again, supporting students enrolling in kindergarten through 8th grade this fall. This program continues as a partnership between the Snohomish School District and the Snohomish Community Food Bank, serving the students attending schools in Snohomish.

This year, Little Cedars Elementary teacher and Committee Chair Sue Koch is continuing the work of former colleague Doris Wentworth who started the program a number of years ago. “It was Doris’ hope that every student would start school with the needed supplies and a new backpack,” said Koch. “It is because of her inspiration that this program continues to serve our children.”

Community help continues to be needed. Through Wednesday, August 24:

  • Purchased school supplies can be dropped off at the following Snohomish locations: People’s Bank located inside Fred Meyer, Snohomish Public Library and the Snohomish Community Food Bank.
  • Suggested donations: Composition books, filler paper, pencils, crayons, markers, glues sticks and pocket folders.
  • Monetary donations can be sent to SCFB – P. O. Box 1364, Snohomish, WA 98291. Checks should be made payable to SCFB – SSBP. The Snohomish Community Food Bank is a non-profit 501 (c)(3), making all donations tax deductible.

On Monday, August 29, backpacks will be distributed at the Maple Avenue Campus, 601 Glen Avenue, from 10 a.m. – 7 p.m. Distribution is by appointment only. To sign up, visit the food bank on Tuesdays between 3-7 p.m. or Fridays between 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. through Friday, August 26.
