A new pilot lunch program has launched at many of our elementary schools. The new menu is focused on offering more build-to-order recipes incorporating a larger range of fresh fruits, vegetables, lean proteins and whole grains, while reducing the number of processed menu items we offer students.
In the fall of 2010, the Snohomish School District began its journey with the help of parents, staff and the students to offer healthier menu options. A parent advisory committee, made of parent volunteers from each of our elementary schools, was formed and has identified the goals of the Food Service Program as:
As the district moves forward, we plan to reach out to students and their families to educate them on why nutrition is important and how they can make better, healthier choices.
As part of the program, some of our elementary schools have a different lunch menu than other district elementary schools. The district will use the input and data received from the piolet schools in the coming months to launch a new Food Service Program to all of our district elementary schools in the 2011-2012 school year.
The new lunch offerings are focused on fresh-cooked options, while many of the standard daily lunch options, such as chicken burgers, cheeseburgers, chicken nuggets, will be available less frequently. We are excited as we begin our journey, and look forward to your support and input!
