An important goal of the Snohomish School District is to assist each student to achieve their full potential and be successful.
Some students face certain learning, physical, emotional, and developmental challenges that interfere with their educational progress and achievement. Often these challenges are such that the students cannot overcome them without special attention and support.
Eligibility
To qualify for special education the following criteria must be met:
How to get services
If your child is struggling, speak to your child's teacher or contact the building principal. The district has many resources to help students before turning to special education. Families who wish to investigate whether their child would qualify for special education services should contact a school counselor for a confidential consultation.
In addition to specially trained teachers, the district has many highly trained support staff to work with families to help students be successful.
Psychologists
Each school has a part-time psychologist who is trained in the fields of psychology and education to help students reach their full potential as students and as people. Psychologists are available to help all students make the most from their educational experiences. If you have a concern about your child, call your school psychologist.
Occupational Therapists
Occupational Therapists can help students who have difficulty with activities such as drawing, writing, arts and crafts, recess, PE, and other daily life activities. If you have a concern about your child's fine or gross motor skills, contact your child's teacher or the building principal.
Physical Therapists
Physical Therapists address how a child's physical functioning impacts learning, mobility, accessibility, and safety within the educational environment. If you have a concern about your child's motor development, contact your child's teacher or the building principal.
Speech and Hearing Specialists
Speech and Hearing Specialists work with children whose speech, language development, or hearing loss are impacting their learning. If you have a concern about your child's speech or hearing, contct your child's teacher or the building principal.
The Transition Center is a day program for students with disabilities aged 18-21 who have completed the high school program and are in need of services to help transition from public school to adult life. The program is located at the Parkway Campus, 525 13th St., Snohomish.
