School Closure - Weather Delays/Late Start

When winter arrives, the possibility of school closure or delay in starting time due to weather or road conditions must be considered.

Families and schools share the responsibility for providing a safe environment for students while they are riding district buses and during times of emergency school closures.  Please encourage your student(s) to be cooperative in observing the safety rules enforced by bus drivers.

School closure and late start
Radio stations like KIRO 710 AM, KING 98.1 FM, KOMO 1000 AM, and KRKO 1380 AM, and local television stations KOMO 4, KING 5, and KIRO 7 will be asked to announce school closure or late start information. If Snohomish is not mentioned during the newscast, you will know our schools are open and buses are operating on or near the normal schedule. Because safety is the determining factor, buses may run behind schedule when fog, ice, or snow conditions exist. Parents are urged to make sure their children are adequately clothed so waiting in cold weather will not be too uncomfortable.

Important: If school has been closed for the day, no after-school meetings or practices will be held. All evening meetings/functions scheduled to take place in District facilities will also be canceled.

In addition to the radio and television stations, you can also sign up to receive e-mail alerts whenever school is canceled or delayed. Go to the Public Schools Emergency Communications System Web site at SchoolReport.org, and sign-up for their free automatic alert system by clocking on "Subscribe."

If there is a delayed start, the following schedule changes will apply:

  •     No a.m. or p.m. kindergarten, pre-school, or ECEAP
  •     No out-of-District or special education transportation
  •     No morning skills center
  •     No elementary band
  •     No secondary zero hour classes

Limited transportation information
When weather conditions dictate that certain roads are not safely passable, the district will announce that it is providing "limited transportation." Your child's school office has a list of the affected roads/areas within its boundaries. Once limited transportation has been announced for the day, it will remain in effect for both the morning and afternoon routes, even if roads have cleared during the day.
