Building Positive School Climate Background
In October 2013 our district launched a website on our activities involving Building Positive School Climate. This website contains a number of resources and other important information for our staff, students, families and community about our district’s work centered on harassment, intimidation and bullying (HIB).
Included are the following sections:
- Resources for Building a Positive School Climate
- Cyberbullying and Online Safety
- Video Resources
- Harassment, Intimidation and Bullying Reporting
In 2012, a group of parents, staff and administrators came together and identified key themes and focal points for communication and education that would guide our district’s HIB work. This included the development of a website. As a district, we continue to refine how we support our students in both developing positive relationships and reporting situations that compromise their sense of safety. Central to our focus is developing respect and building relationships with our students, staff and community. We continually revisit school-wide teachings and lessons that are a part of our prevention efforts.
We continue to share our set of resources with our parent community. We engage principals and teachers in using these resources to further support specific school climate initiatives. In addition to the website, we have designed a brochure to be distributed to parents and community organizations that engages a wider audience in accessing these resources and supports building positive relationships among students in our community.
