Committee Updates

  • Human Rights and Equity Committee Update

On January 22, 2020, the Human Rights and Equity Committee presented a recommendation to the school board regarding areas of focus for the district’s work on equity. The recommendation centered on student voice, family voice, and staff capacity building as a way to create a more connected and inclusively safe culture for all. See meeting notes from December 4 for specifics.

The school board was scheduled to act on the committee’s recommendation after collectively learning more about equity in March, 2020. Unfortunately, due to the school closure, the school board was unable to proceed as planned. It is our hope that the school board will be able to act on the committee recommendation in late summer or early fall.

Presently, the district is in the process of formulating a framework for systematically promoting equity for all students in partnership with Karena Hooks and her associates at Hooks Global, a consulting organization that supports school districts on their equity work. This framework will include enacting the Human Rights and Equity Committee’s recommendation mentioned above once approved by the school board. We hope to have the framework finalized in time for the opening of the new school year.
