Welcome to the 4/5/6 class! Step in here for a great year! The program utilizes a rotating system; students receive each grade level curriculum once in the three years in the program. This year students will be reading about world geography, our 6th grade social studies unit, through novels integrating reading and social studies. Students work on literary skills like plot, characterization, setting, them, author’s purpose, author’s style, mood and literary devices such as simile, metaphor, and personification, in addition to the geography. In math, students will build a foundation of understanding through Visual Math by creating models and then working on the computation of adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing whole numbers, fractions, decimals and percents, depending on their grade level, as well as problem solving. Future Problem Solving, which teaches kids how to think, not what to think, is an important component this year of the class. It stimulates critical and creative thinking skills, encourages students to develop a vision for the future, and develops writing and team building skills on the topics of All in a Day’s Work, Coral Reefs, Human Rights and Trade Barriers. It promises to be an informative and challenging year of interesting topics and units!
