Grizzly Cubs is a program that was established many years ago at Snohomish High School to bring together elementary students and high school students for a mentoring opportunity. When Glacier Peak High School was established in 2008, we started the program here and have had great success.

We bring elementary students (4th through 6th graders at Cathcart Elementary, Little Cedars Elementary, Seattle Hill Elementary and Totem Falls Elementary) together with Glacier Peak High School students. The goal of the program is to provide elementary students with positive role models and high school students an opportunity to be leaders in the community. High school Grizzly Cubs come from all areas of the educational and co-curricular programs so every effort is made to match up students with similar interests.

There are numerous activities throughout the school year. Transportation to and from Grizzly Cub activities is the responsibility of the parent of the elementary cub as well as the parent of the High School Grizzly or the High School Grizzly themselves if they can drive. The only activity that transportation is provided for is the lunch visits where the cubs come to Glacier Peak for lunch and when the High School Grizzlies go to the elementary schools for lunch. High School Grizzlies are NOT allowed to transport or drive the elementary cubs to any event.

It is suggested that all Grizzly Cubs and High School Grizzlies make every effort to attend all scheduled events. High School Grizzlies that participate will gain leadership and mentoring skills and also receive an honor cord to wear at their graduation ceremony.

Communication is the most important factor in the success of the Grizzly Cubs program. It is vital that the high school Grizzly Cubs and the elementary Grizzly Cubs communicate with one another as to their respective intentions concerning the Grizzly Cubs/ASB sponsored activities. Communication is a two-way medium and the responsibility of keeping in contact falls on both High School Grizzlies and the Grizzly Cubs. The phone numbers of the High School Grizzly and the Grizzly Cubs will be provided after they are matched up.

It should also be understood that each Grizzlies/Cubs relationship will vary in the amount of time that the two spend together. Some High School Grizzlies/Grizzly Cubs will see or talk to each other weekly while other Grizzly/ Cubs may only see each other at scheduled activities. It is important to remember that not all High School Grizzlies/Grizzly Cubs can make all the activities. Parents/guardians, it is vital that you become involved in the High School Grizzlies/Grizzly Cubs relationship so that communication channels and expectations are understood by all.
