Students are responsible for knowing and following these expectations - Factors that could be considered by individual teachers when giving citizenship grades could include, but are not limited to the following expectations of respect:

• Responsibility/Service: We are guardians of Valley View Middle School. As guardians, we look to make the school a better place to learn. We strive to look beyond ourselves, to help in any way we can. We are driven by the impulse to serve. Through small gestures we make everyone feel welcome and cared for: students, EAs, teachers and all staff members.
• Effort: We strive to give our best every day, safe in the knowledge that though we may fall short of our goals, make mistakes, follow the wrong path, we will have pushed ourselves. We place no limits on what we can do. We ask to be challenged.
• Spirit: We strive to give our best every day, safe in the knowledge that though we may fall short of our goals, make mistakes, follow the wrong path, we will have pushed ourselves. We place no limits on what we can do. We ask to be challenged.
• Preparation: We know what is expected of us every day, and we come with the materials to create, solve, theorize, communicate, map and chart, perform and listen. We know when deadlines loom, and we make the time to complete whatever task to the best of our abilities. As members of a group or team, we know we must be ready to do our part because we are only as strong as the sum of our parts.
• Empathy: To feel sympathy for someone’s misfortune is not enough. It is too easy to say, “I feel so sorry for…” and much harder to try to understand what that person is feeling, to live in someone else’s emotional skin for a while. Empathy brings us together in a shared experience. When we empathize, we are never alone; we are connected. When we understand and appreciate where we come from culturally, intellectually, socially and emotionally, we are never alone; we are connected.
• Community: We are enthusiastic. We care about others. We are guardians of the school and our schoolmates, and we feel that we all have a job to do to make our school a little bit better. Each day we enter the city limits of Valley View, we are members of a special community.
• Trustworthiness: When enter the school, walk down its halls, and sit down in our classrooms, we are comfortable in the knowledge that we are free from harsh words, cruel judgments, and intimidation. We don’t fear for our personal property. We know that we can rely on our peers, our teachers, administrators and staff members. We know that because we trust in one another.
