COVID Testing Protocols for High Risk Indoor Sports - updated December 17, 2021

To maintain the health and safety of our athletes, the Governor’s Office and Washington State Department of Health have updated their health and safety protocols for those sports the state has classified as “high-risk indoor sports” to continue take place this winter. In order to participate, all basketball players, wrestlers and cheerleaders (includes all athletes, coaches, trainers and supporting personnel, regardless of vaccination status) must engage in 3x/week COVID-19 testing as outlined in the December 17, 2021 safety guidance developed by the Governor’s Office and Washington State Department of Health (see pages 9-11).

To support athletes, their families, and our community, our middle and high schools offer free rapid antigen testing to our wrestlers, basketball players and cheerleaders. Testing is required of all athletes, coaches, trainers and supporting personnel, regardless of vaccination status. These COVID-19 tests provide an extra measure of safety during practice and contests.

Testing must occur at least 3x/week and must be performed on all athletes, coaches, trainers and supporting personnel regardless of vaccination status within 24 hours of any competition. The test is a self-collected nasal swab, which the individual inserts less than one inch into the nostril. Individuals will receive results from the test in 15 minutes. Our school administrators, coaches and assistant coaches have been trained to observe the specimen collection and result the test. Our district is currently using the BinaxNOW COVID–19 (manufactured by Abbott) or CareStart (manufactured by AccessBio) rapid antigen tests.

In order to administer the rapid antigen tests, the state has mandated an online recording mechanism through a tool called SimpleReport. As part of the testing process, parents/guardians of athletes must enroll in the online registration tool at this link prior to testing. Those who are ages 18 and older can complete the registration process on their own. This online registration must be completed in order for our schools to administer the rapid antigen testing. In completing the online registration, parents/guardians or individuals (if ages 18 and older) will provide consent for this type of testing. All information will be maintained by the Washington State Department for Health and is strictly confidential.

Anyone who tests positive will be sent home immediately to isolate for 10 days. Positive results will be communicated to the Washington State Department of Health and the Snohomish Health District. Any athlete, coach, trainer and supporting personnel who has symptoms or is a known close-contact to a person who tested positive for COVID-19 should stay home and not attend practice or a contest.

    Important resources:

    Washington Mask Mandate

Per Governor Inslee’s mandate, face coverings/masks are now required for outdoor events with 500 or more people, regardless of vaccination status (see page 2). Please remember this when attending outdoor school district athletic events, as this new mandate will be strictly enforced for all those attending.

Our district and schools will be proactive in adhering to these guidelines with increased facility signage, in-game public announcements, in-school student reminders, etc. that highlight the face covering/masking expectations. The same guidelines hold true when attending away (non-home) events and activities.

The Governor's office and Washington State Department of Health have noted they will allow K-12 athletics and extracurricular activities to continue so long as they trust that their member schools will enforce the mandate at each and every event. All of us have done tremendous work over the last 18 months to get athletics and activities back up and running with fans. We kindly request that all those in attendance please adhere to the mandates to make sure these participation opportunities continue to be available for our students. Please be kind to our employees as they enforce this state-level mandate in order to keep our students, staff, families and community safe and healthy.

    Thank you!
