Music (Band & Choir)
Jazz Band Audition Information
Dear Centennial Middle School music students and families:
Centennial Middle School offers Jazz Band for advanced music students enrolled in Concert Band, Cadet Band or Choir who play saxophone, trumpet, trombone, piano, drum set, bass or guitar. Jazz Band will meet daily from 6:30-7:20 a.m. (that's not a typo!) and be added to the students' schedules as a zero hour period. Students must arrange their own transportation to rehearsals, and many families set up carpools after auditions. Auditions for new members will be held in early September.
All auditions will be held from 6:30-7:20 a.m. in the Band Room during the first five-day week of school in September. Specific dates are announced at the start of the school year.
To those auditioning, please be prepared to play a piece of your choice that demonstrates your playing ability and technique. Bring the music with you so I can see it. It does not have to be a jazz piece and it is not necessary to memorize it. Also expect to do a little sight reading. Also:
- Sax, trumpet and trombone: 8th grade players should prepare a chromatic scale, at least one octave ascending and descending, and 7th graders should prepare a concert Bb scale. Also, prepare to demonstrate your high range.
- Piano, guitar and bass: Prepare to play Bb, Eb and F major scales. Piano and Guitar players will be asked to play various major and minor chords by name. Knowledge of simple jazz voicings is a plus.
- Drummers (on drum set): Demonstrate simple jazz patterns, preferably with fills. Keep time at several different tempos. Keep time with a jazz recording.
Please feel free to contact me if you have questions about auditions.
