2024 WASA Award Recipients

2024 WASA award recipientsThe Washington Association of School Administrators (WASA) – Sno-Isle Region 109 recently recognized these individuals for their unique contributions to the Snohomish School District. Retired educator Judy Dahlberg received the 2024 WASA Community Leadership Award and Glacier Peak High School student Emily Lin was the recipient of the 2024 Student Leadership Award. We are thankful for their contributions to our district and community!
  • WASA Community Leadership Award – Retired Valley View Middle School science teacher Judy Dahlberg has embarked on a mission to cultivate environmental stewardship within the Snohomish community.

    After 28 years in Snohomish School District classrooms, Judy's passion for ecosystem education didn't end with her retirement in 2021. Her commitment to environmental education continued outside the classroom through habitat restoration projects with fellow science teachers, the formation of the Valley View Habitat Restoration Club, and engagement in community volunteer projects involving district students and community volunteers.

    Known for her passion of curriculum on ecosystems, Judy focused on highlighting the positive aspects of making a difference in the environment. Her journey began in 2000 when she initiated a habitat restoration mission with her students, addressing the invasive blackberry bushes that were overwhelming on the Valley View property.

    To sustain the momentum, Judy formed the Valley View Habitat Restoration Club around 2015. The club currently has more than a dozen core middle school and high school student members. Students work with Judy to pick an area of land on school property to concentrate on. They set their purpose for the area, learn about biodiversity, and set goals for their restoration site.

    This year Judy is also helping current science teachers with the school’s "outdoor ecology lab" which engages middle school students in hands-on activities such as removing invasive species, studying native plants, understanding ecological disturbance, participating in replanting efforts, and practicing land maintenance.

    Judy's commitment to environmental education has left an indelible mark on the Snohomish School District. Her habitat restoration project continues to grow, fostering a sense of responsibility and awareness among students and community members alike. Thank you, Judy!

  • WASA Student Leadership Award – Glacier Peak High School sophomore Emily Lin has demonstrated significant leadership in numerous roles throughout the Snohomish School District. Along with serving on the Student Advisory Council for the Snohomish School District Board of Directors, she serves in leadership roles in several student organizations at Glacier Peak High School. She is the president of the German Club, co-president of the Japanese Club, secretary for the Chinese Club, and is a member of the Sonic Squirrels robotics team, varsity badminton team, and Key Club. Her level of engagement embodies the theme for Glacier Peak students preparing for extraordinary lives.

    Emily’s goal for this year was to build her leadership skills and promote student inclusivity. She drives to be a collaborator who inspires others through communication and stepping out of her own comfort zones. As an immigrant, she expresses that she understands the importance of inclusivity and aims to promote a sense of community by representing the voices of her peers. She worked this year to bring together student groups on campus for a cultural expo which will be held in collaborations with the career and technical education and art departments. In addition, she has served a key role in identifying communication avenues to and from student groups, which been supportive in our district focus centering on student voice.

    Emily’s attention to detail, advocacy, and engagement shine as an example of her character and care for all people. We are grateful for this opportunity to honor and celebrate her along with her work to amplify student voices. Thank you, Emily!
