Class of 2020 Update - May 15, 2020

Yesterday we received the Washington State Department of Health’s graduation guidance. For more than a month, our school and district administrative teams have been actively investigating and planning ways to best celebrate and recognize our Class of 2020 within the state’s “Stay Home, Stay Healthy” framework. Through feedback from our survey of seniors and families, we clearly heard that the ability to be with family and/or walk across a stage was of utmost importance.

With that feedback, our school and district administrators developed a drive-through approach that would allow seniors, one at a time to walk across an outdoor stage, while their families watch from their vehicles. We had initially planned and scheduled these events for late May so the videos could be compiled and viewed on the scheduled graduation dates (AIM High School - June 4 and Glacier Peak High School/Snohomish High School - June 8).

However, with the guidance we received from the State Department of Health, our plan is only possible after our region enters Phase 2 of the state’s “Safe Start” plan. Although there is not a definitive date, we have been told that our region will likely move into Phase 2 sometime after June 1. It is for this reason we have decided to move the dates of our plan to mid-June. Should we remain in Phase 1 through our scheduled dates in June, we will only be able to offer the virtual option that follows the rules under Phase 1.

Under our plan, students and their families will arrive at their respective high schools at a preassigned time on the day of their commencement event (see dates below). The family’s vehicle will pull up adjacent to an outdoor stage and when directed, the graduate will exit the vehicle and be invited to cross the stage in cap and gown by themselves. Immediate family from the student’s household will be able to watch from the vehicle. Graduates will have a professional photo/video taken and will then return to their vehicle. The logistics and details that must be followed to make this possible will be communicated to families in the coming weeks.

The dates of those events have been moved to:

  • AIM High School – Wednesday, June 17
  • Glacier Peak High School - Thursday, June 18
  • Snohomish High School – Friday, June 19

These individual recognition events will be photographed/videotaped and compiled into larger individual high school commencement videos which will be distributed to all seniors and their families in early July when production is complete. These videos will also include prerecorded commencement speeches and other highlights.

Seniors’ Last Day

We also want our seniors and their families to be aware the last day of classes for the Class of 2020 will be Monday, June 8. However, the state regulations require seniors must be engaged through Friday, June 12. Therefore, online reflection surveys, textbook and laptop return, and other year-end activities will be planned for those last few days. Please watch for more information from the individual high schools on the dates of these activities.

Again, thank you for your understanding and patience during these times. We are fully committed to celebrating the Class of 2020 and their individual and collective accomplishments.
